Britney Spears is believed to have family roots in Tottenham.
Genealogists at the London Metropolitan Archives exploring the rejuvenated
pop star's family tree have discovered her great-grandparents lived in north-east London.
They also uncovered the ancestors were apparently "living in sin".
Parish records show George Anthony Portell and Lillian Esther Lewis
had been living together before the couple were married.
The pair had given the same address on their marriage records,
suggesting they had been sharing a home before getting hitched -
considered a big taboo at the time.
Britney's private life has been the subject of much moralising among the tabloid press.
But Laurence Ward, head of the digital wing of the archive, believes her relatives
decision to "live in sin" may have been less salacious.
Spears's great-grandfather was an able seaman in the Royal Navy,
and may not have had an address of his own, Mr Ward said.
"He may have been away a lot," he said.
"It's highly possible that because the guy was in the Navy, he used her address.
There's no way we can prove anything either way. It's open to interpretation."
After a lull in her glittering pop career, Britney is said to be back on the comeback trail
with three awards at the recent MTV awards.
Researchers at the North London record centre traced the Spears family records
while converting their historic documents onto computer.
The records held by the archive cover 500 years of London's history
and contain information on more than 77 million people.
