Janet Jackson returns to Stage

Janet Jackson
Janet Jackson resumed her "Rock Witchu Tour" October 15 in Washington, D.C.
The 42-year-old singer had canceled shows since September 29
due to health problems.

Her publicist said Jackson was suffering from vestibular migraines,
a condition that can cause severe dizziness.

Janet Jackson looked peeved and lonely as she took the stage
at the Izod Center for her resumed Rock Witchu tour.

With her band banished to a side platform and her dancers nowhere in sight,
Jackson opened the long night alone, stalking the stage in an aggressive pose
while sporting an expression that suggested a mix of malice and grit.

At least one-fourth of the seats went wanting, leading some to speculate
that the reason for those cancellations wasn't entirely medical.

Her figure was different recalling her meaty, earliest days
before she slimmed down and became a global sex symbol.

In a wise move, Jackson downplayed material from her justifiably ignored new CD,
playing up old hits instead. But the decision cut two ways.
It re-proved the great appeal, and rarity, of songs like "Miss You Much" or "Control,"
with their bracingly curt rhythms and hot staccato melodies.
But it also made Jackson's heyday seem distant.

Songs like "All for You" and "Escapade" feature a fantasia of sound,
and Jackson seemed pleased to bask in them. In fact, the singer has so many hits,
she could afford to cram a bunch into an invigorating medley.

But then the show flagged as quickly as it had crested.
Jackson ruined her momentum with an excruciatingly long, faux S&M segment
and weaker material toward her close.
